This name is given to books, the covers of which bend right back on themselves (and are often tied with ribbons) so that the pages fan out cylindrically to display a number of segments each forming a layered scene - rather like miniature sets mounted on a revolving stage. Such novelties first appeared in the late 1930s but achieved more popularity after the War when a British firm - the Folding Book Co (later taken over by Chatto & Windus) - produced a series based on pantomime subjects. Displayed is 'Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves' with designs by lonicus published in 1947.
